How to Advertise on Instagram: Costs, Steps and Measuring Results

How to Advertise on Instagram: Costs, Steps and Measuring Results

There are two ways to advertise on Instagram. The first is the "boost" button inside the app: you turn an existing post into a sponsored one with a few taps, setup takes two minutes, control is limited. The second is Meta Ads Manager: it gives full control over audience, budget, placement and creative, and setup takes half an hour. The cost is not fixed on either route; it is set by auction, and you set the daily budget. Boosting is enough for a small trial; regular advertising aimed at sales needs Ads Manager.

To advertise, the Instagram account has to be a professional account (business or creator); it is converted in a few steps from settings and is free. If you are going to use Ads Manager, you open a Meta Business account and link your Instagram account and a payment method to it. A Facebook page is no longer mandatory, but it is still required for some ad types and placements; opening one takes a few minutes, not opening one creates limits later.

Payment is by credit card, and the invoice comes from Meta's Irish company; for bookkeeping this invoice is treated differently for VAT purposes, so it is worth asking your accountant in advance. Once ad spend passes a certain amount, it is normal for Meta to ask for identity verification.

Boost or Ads Manager?

Boost (sponsored post)

An existing post or reel; a few audience options; daily budget and duration. Suitable for simple goals such as gaining followers and profile visits. Sales measurement is limited, it cannot use pixel data.

Ads Manager

Campaign objective (sales, leads, traffic, engagement), detailed audiences, placement selection, multiple creatives, pixel and catalogue links. The only option for e-commerce.

The difference is felt most in measurement. A boosted post counts likes, comments and profile visits for you; it does not show how many people came to your site and bought. In Ads Manager, a sales campaign matches on-site purchases to the ad through the Meta pixel or the Conversions API and reports cost per conversion. For any account whose budget exceeds a few thousand lira a month, moving to Ads Manager is unavoidable.

Step-by-Step Setup in Ads Manager

Meta's interface changes often; the names of the steps may look different, but the order stays the same.

  • Choose the objective. Sales, leads, traffic, engagement, awareness. Sales for e-commerce; choosing "traffic" and expecting sales is the most common mistake, because Meta then finds people who click cheaply but do not buy.
  • Link the conversion event. With the sales objective, Meta asks which event to optimise for: purchase, add to basket, start of checkout. If the pixel is not installed, stop at this step and install the pixel first.
  • Budget and schedule. A daily budget spends more evenly; a lifetime budget suits a specific campaign period. Keeping the daily budget at a few times your target cost per conversion at the start leaves the system room to learn.
  • Audience. Location, age, interests, or people who have visited your site (pixel data). Meta's broad targeting option often brings cheaper conversions than narrow interest lists; try broad first, then narrow.
  • Placement. Automatic placement distributes across feed, stories, reels and explore. If your creative is only ready in vertical format, restrict placements accordingly.
  • Creative. A video or image with vertical (9:16) and square (4:5) versions that shows the product in the first three seconds. Short copy, a clear offer, an explicit button.
Tip
Do not change the budget, audience or creative in the first days after launching a campaign. Meta restarts the learning phase with every change; a frequently edited campaign produces more expensive results than one left alone. If changes are needed, make them in one batch.

What Decides Instagram Ad Costs?

An Instagram ad has no list price. For every impression, an auction runs among the advertisers who want to reach the same audience; what you are charged depends on your bid, the estimated quality and relevance of the ad, and competition for that audience. The daily budget is whatever you set; Meta does not exceed it. The minimum daily budget is a small amount that varies by currency and objective.

You track cost with two units: cost per thousand impressions (CPM) and cost per click (CPC). In periods such as November, the run-up to public holidays and back-to-school, CPM rises noticeably; read that as the market getting more expensive, not your ad getting worse. The real question is: what am I paying per conversion, and is it below my product margin. As an example, with a 600 TRY daily budget, a 30 TRY CPM and a 1% click-through rate you get 200 clicks a day; if 2% of clickers buy, that is 4 sales and an ad cost of 150 TRY per sale. These numbers are an example; your own account's values can be half of this or double, depending on sector and creative.

Measuring Results: The Ad Panel Alone Is Not Enough

Ads Manager's sales count is calculated under Meta's own attribution rule: if a person who saw or clicked the ad buys within a certain period, the sale is credited to Meta. If the same person saw the ad and bought after searching on Google, Google Ads credits itself with the same sale. That is why the sales Meta reports can look higher than your store's real order count; we explained the reasons in why Meta and Google results don't match.

Three things make measurement reliable. Setting up the Conversions API alongside the Meta pixel: it sends purchase data lost to browser blocking from the server side. UTM parameters on ad links: they let you see Instagram traffic separately in GA4. A weekly comparison with the real order count in the store platform: if the ad panels are rising while orders stand still, the problem is in sales, not measurement.

Caution
On sites that use a privacy-compliant cookie consent box, purchases by visitors who decline consent are not seen by the pixel. The conversions Meta reports can fall short for that reason; the Conversions API partly closes the gap. Always make ad budget decisions together with real order data.

What to Watch When Advertising on Instagram

  • If the goal is sales, choose sales as the campaign objective too; the traffic objective brings cheap clicks, not customers
  • Install the pixel and the Conversions API before the campaign; measurement installed afterwards does not recover the history
  • Showing the same person more than four or five times a week (frequency) lowers click-through rate; refresh the creative or widen the audience
  • The ad copy and the landing page should state the same offer; an ad promising a discount leading to a page where no discount is visible is the most expensive mistake
  • Keep the proportion of text on the image low; Meta no longer rejects it, but performance drops
  • Evaluate results weekly, not daily; daily fluctuation is too noisy for decisions
  • Follow the comments; a customer whose question goes unanswered does not buy, and an ad sitting under negative comments burns money

Meta's own getting-started guide and current placement specifications live in the Meta Business Help Centre. In AdsLuma, once Meta Ads is connected, spend, CPM, CTR, conversions and ROAS by campaign, ad set and ad appear side by side with Google Ads under the same definitions; every night the Watch flags ad sets that spent their budget without producing conversions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instagram Ads

How much does it cost to advertise on Instagram?

There is no fixed price; you set the daily budget and Meta buys impressions by auction. A small trial can start with a few hundred lira. What matters is not total spend but keeping the cost per sale below the product margin.

What is the difference between a sponsored post and an ad?

A sponsored post (boost) promotes an existing post from inside the app with a few options; it is fast and its measurement is limited. An ad placed through Ads Manager gives full control over objective, audience, placement and pixel links, and measures sales.

Do I need a Facebook page for Instagram ads?

Not for boosting. In Ads Manager, some ad types and placements still require a Facebook page; since opening one takes a few minutes, opening it from the start avoids limits later.

When do ad results appear?

The first data arrives within hours, but Meta's learning phase usually needs a week and about 50 conversions. Intervening in the campaign before that resets the learning; wait at least seven days before the first decision.
