What Is Google Shopping? Merchant Center Setup and Shopping Ads Guide

Google Shopping is the system that shows your products with an image, price and store name in Google search results and in the Shopping tab. It has two parts: Merchant Center, where you send Google your product data, and Google Ads Shopping campaigns, where you bid on those products. Merchant Center is free, and products can appear in the Shopping tab as free listings without any ads. When you do advertise, you pay only per click.

How Shopping Ads Differ From Text Ads

Someone searching for "kids raincoat" sees a row of boxes at the top of the results page: product photo, price, store name. Those are Shopping ads. A text ad tries to persuade with a headline and description; with a Shopping ad the user has already seen the product and the price before clicking. That is why click-through rates are usually lower than text ads and purchase rates among clickers are higher. If your price is clearly above competitors', this is the first place you will feel it.

You do not pick keywords for Shopping ads. Google decides which searches to show your product for by reading its title, description and category. That means most of the work happens in your product data, not in the ad panel. A product titled "Raincoat" will sit behind one titled "Kids Raincoat Yellow Age 3-4" for the search "kids raincoat age 4".

What Is Merchant Center?

Google Merchant Center is the free account where you introduce your product catalogue to Google. Product name, price, stock status, image and shipping details go here; Google uses that data for free listings and for Shopping ads alike. Think of Merchant Center as separate from the ad account: even if you never run ads, your products should be accurate and approved here.

To open a Merchant Center account in Türkiye you need a Google account, a verified website and product pages that show prices in TRY. Site verification completes automatically if you have already verified the site in Search Console. Products will not be approved until shipping settings are entered; free shipping is defined here as well. Tax information is not requested for Türkiye; prices need to include VAT and match the site exactly.

Merchant Center's three jobs
Receive product data, review each product against Google's policies and approve or reject it, and make approved products available to Google Ads and free listings. Almost every problem you see in the ad panel starts here.

The Product Feed: Where Ad Quality Is Decided

The feed is the data file that describes each of your products line by line. Platforms such as ikas, Shopify and T-Soft generate it automatically and send it to Merchant Center; Google calls this a "data source". You can also feed products manually through Google Sheets, but once you pass a few hundred products, keeping stock and prices in sync by hand stops working.

Google requires these fields: product ID, title, description, product page link, image link, availability and price. Apparel and footwear also need colour, size, gender and age group. Products that have a barcode are expected to carry a GTIN; if you make unbranded products you must say so in the feed, otherwise the product is rejected for a "missing identifier". The full list is in Google's product data specification; your platform fills most fields itself, but it is worth checking once which ones go out empty.

In practice the field that makes the biggest difference is the title. Platforms take the title from the product name on your site, and that name was often written for the warehouse, not the customer: "YGM-2024-SR". Google cannot match that title to any search. A good Shopping title is built in this order: brand, product type, distinguishing feature, then size or dimensions if relevant. "Zıpla Kids Children's Raincoat Yellow Age 3-4". The description also works better as a plain paragraph explaining what the product is rather than the marketing copy from your site.

Tip
If the price field in your feed does not update within minutes of a discount going live on the site, Google rejects the product for a "price mismatch". Check how often your feed refreshes before a sale; on most platforms the default is once a day.

Disapproved Products and Why

In newly opened accounts it is normal for a share of products to be rejected. Seeing about a third of the catalogue rejected in the first week of a 300-product children's clothing store does not surprise us; the causes usually come down to the same handful:

  • Price mismatch: the feed price differs from the price shown on the product page. Usually the feed was not updated after a discount, or the price only appears once a size is selected.
  • Missing or wrong GTIN: the barcode is mistyped or belongs to another product. For unbranded goods the "identifier_exists" field must be sent as "no".
  • Image problems: "sale" text, a logo overlay or low resolution on the image. Google wants the product image to show only the product.
  • Stock mismatch: the feed says "in stock" while the page says "sold out".
  • Policy violation: cosmetics descriptions making health claims, restricted product groups, misleading promotional copy.

A rejected product does not appear in ads; the real loss, though, is the quiet one. Products that look approved but have weak titles and mediocre images get impressions, do not get clicked and drag the campaign average down. Checking approved, limited and rejected counts in the Merchant Center Products report once a week is a more effective habit than adding money to the campaign.

Shopping Campaign Types

Google Ads offers two campaign types for Shopping. In a Standard Shopping campaign you build the product groups yourself, bid separately on each and watch which searches you appear for in the search terms report. You keep control; setup takes effort. Performance Max replaced Smart Shopping in 2022; it shows products beyond the Shopping tab on YouTube, Gmail and the Display Network, and Google manages bidding and targeting. Fewer settings, less visibility: you cannot see in detail which search produced the sale.

When Standard Shopping

When margins differ widely between product groups, when you want to exclude specific searches with negative keywords, or when you are starting out and want to learn which products sell.

When Performance Max

In accounts with conversion history, when you want to scale the whole catalogue on one budget, and when you can reach roughly 30 conversions a day per campaign.

For most Turkish e-commerce stores the sensible order is a few weeks of Standard Shopping to see which product groups sell, then a move to Performance Max with that learning. Setup details for both are in Google's Shopping ads help page.

What Do Shopping Ads Cost?

There is no fixed price for Shopping ads; you pay per click, and the click price depends on the product category, competition and the quality of your product data. In Türkiye, click costs in apparel and home goods tend to sit below text ads; electronics and cosmetics are more contested. When setting a daily budget, look at cost per conversion rather than cost per click: if 100 clicks at 8 TRY produce 4 sales, you paid 200 TRY per sale, and that figure has to stay below your product margin.

ROAS in Shopping campaigns should be read differently from text campaigns. Because the user clicks after seeing the price, conversion rates are high, but basket value usually stays close to the price of the product clicked. A ROAS of 4 or more is a reasonable starting point; with a thin product margin even 4 may be losing money. To know, you need a view that deducts product cost, shipping and returns from ad revenue first.

Free Listings: Visibility Without Ads

Approved products in Merchant Center can be listed in the Google Shopping tab without any ad budget. The traffic volume is small compared with ads, but it costs nothing; for branded product searches ("zıpla kids raincoat") free listings alone can bring sales. All it takes is enrolling in the free listings programme in Merchant Center and keeping products approved. When you fix the feed for ads, the quality of free listings improves on its own.

How to Measure Performance

The first report to open in a Shopping campaign is product-level performance. A common picture: campaign-wide ROAS shows 5 while half the catalogue gets no impressions at all and revenue comes from a handful of products. The right move then is not to raise the budget but to rework the titles and images of the products that get no impressions.

The second report is the alignment between Merchant Center and Google Ads: if the number of rejected products grows, the campaign narrows, and you see it as "performance dropped". The third is GA4: the add-to-basket and purchase rates of users arriving from Shopping ads should be compared with organic traffic to the same product. If ad traffic converts noticeably worse than organic, the problem is not the product page but the ad appearing for the wrong searches.

Caution
The conversion count in Google Ads will not match your store's order count exactly; attribution windows and cookie consent naturally separate them. Use the ad panel to compare campaigns against each other, and order data for real revenue. We explain the reasons in why Google Ads and GA4 conversions differ.

In AdsLuma, once Merchant Center is connected, the Product Hub screen lists approved, limited and rejected products with their rejection reasons; with Google Ads connected, the ad performance of the same products sits alongside. The question "which product was rejected and which one makes money" is answered without switching between two panels.

Frequently Asked Questions About Google Shopping

Is Google Shopping free?

The Merchant Center account and the free listings programme are free. To show products in the ad area of the Shopping tab you need a Shopping campaign in Google Ads and you pay per click.

What do I need for a Merchant Center account?

A Google account, a website whose ownership is verified, product pages with prices in TRY, shipping settings and a product feed. Platforms such as ikas, Shopify and T-Soft generate the feed automatically.

Why are my products being rejected?

The most common reasons are price or stock mismatches between feed and site, missing or incorrect GTINs, product images with text on them, and descriptions that violate policy. The Products report in Merchant Center shows the rejection reason for each product.

Shopping ads or Performance Max?

A Standard Shopping campaign at the start lets you see which products sell. Once enough conversion history exists, Performance Max is better suited to scaling the whole catalogue across wider placements.
